Sept 10–Oct 18
Open today 10–6

Steve DiBenedetto’s paintings are similarly restless, though their surfaces often appear as sites of accumulation, disruption, and revision. Drooping phalluses, disembodied eyes, lines, blobs, ochres, and blues emerge from crusted and scraped surfaces. The paintings are psychedelic and intensely physical, registering an artist willing to continually complicate, destroy, and rebuild his own images. DiBenedetto’s practice is rooted in improvisation and revision, and in a sustained curiosity about the limits of paint.

The gallery at the New York Studio School is open 7 days a week, 10 AM to 6 PM.

[RSVP FULL] TONIGHT: October 7, 2026– Alexi Worth [RSVP FULL] TONIGHT: October 7, 2026– Alexi Worth will present his lecture "Manet, Delacroix, and Perpendicular Light."

Join us in person at 8 W 8th St. Please RSVP through the link in our bio or nyss.org/lectures/.

Alexi Worth is a Guggenheim Award-winning New York painter whose work has been singled out by Roberta Smith of the New York Times as representing the continued vitality of painting today, and praised by Jerry Saltz for depictions that “resist naming and stay titillating to the eye.”

Worth’s art differs from much recent figuration in its economy and simplicity, suggesting an effort to return the contemplative power of abstraction to figurative art. Also known as a critic, Worth has written about a wide range of artists for publications ranging from the Brooklyn Rail to Artforum and the New Yorker.

A pioneer of installation art, Donna Dennis is known for her complex sculptural installations with sound. BLUE BRIDGE/ red shift, a 24-foot-long evocation of railway drawbridges was exhibited at NYC’s SculptureCenter in 1993. Her subway-inspired Deep Station filled the lobby of the Brooklyn Museum in 1987. In 2007, an outdoor installation, Tourist Cabins on Park Avenue, was seen on Park Avenue, NYC. In 2013, Coney Night Maze, a complex mixed media installation with sound that drew inspiration from the maze of layered fences, gates, ramps and barriers nestled beneath the Cyclone roller coaster, was at the Neuberger Museum. In 2018 Ship and Dock/Nights and Days or The Gazer, incorporating video into a sculptural installation showed at Lesley Heller Gallery, New York. In 2023 an expanded version of the work was exhibited at Private Public Gallery in Hudson, NY. In 2024, the legendary O’Flaherty’s Gallery on New York’s Lower East Side mounted an exhibition of early works from the 1970s and one work from the 1990s, Houses and Hotels. Also, in 2024, Max Levai’s The Ranch, in Montauk, NY, exhibited Deep Station which was first shown at the Brooklyn Museum in 1985.

Dennis has collaborated with poets Anne Waldman, Kenward Elmslie, Daniel Wolff and Ted Berrigan and with performance artist/puppeteer Dan Hurlin. In 2023 Monacelli Press published a career-spanning monograph, Donna Dennis: A Poet in Three Dimensions and in 2024 Bamberger Books released Writing Toward Dawn: Selected Journals 1969-1982. Dennis was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2025. She is currently at work on a temporary sculpture to be installed in Times Square in the Fall of 2027.

Who are we when we are being watched? Who are we when no one is looking? A persona can be a mask, a costume, a character, a performance, a fantasy, a projection, or simply a version of ourselves we have decided to inhabit. In many traditions, emotions, places and ideas are personified and given personae. We invent personae for other people, for animals, for ourselves, and sometimes without realizing we are making them at all. They can protect us, disguise us, exaggerate us, or reveal something we otherwise could not say.

Personae wants works that play with these shifting versions of the self and the subject. The work need not be explicitly figurative or autobiographical. The exhibition is interested in the space between the person, the idea of self and the character: the images we receive and present, the beings we imagine ourselves to be, and the forms that emerge.

A persona might appear as a portrait, a body, a fictional character, a recurring image, a gesture, a disguise, or something much stranger. What matters is an interest in the ways identity can be invented, performed, obscured, or exposed.

Application and full details can be found in our link in bio!

Thank you to John Yau for this insightful review o Thank you to John Yau for this insightful review of 'This Heat,' which is now on view at NYSS through October 18!

An excerpt:
"Paint is not just paint. The feeling that paint is more than just a physical medium comes through clearly in the work, connecting [Steve DiBenedetto] with artists as diverse as Alfred Jensen and Antonin Artnaud, who believed art could open the viewers' consciousness to a higher order."

Here is a peek into Jilaine Jones' Sculpture Marat Here is a peek into Jilaine Jones' Sculpture Marathon, 'Researching Sensation,' which wrapped up earlier this month.

The Marathon explored both observational and metaphorical approaches to sculpture making. It prompted students to "work empirically with materials and variations of building connecting, organizing; without preconception, as an unknown territory. The interwoven factors challenge and collaborate with each other, encouraging invention."

More snapshots from Fran O'Neill's Drawing Maratho More snapshots from Fran O'Neill's Drawing Marathon, 'Moving Parts,' that happened earlier this month.

This Marathon focused on pursuing unexpected images through making, reworking, and discovery. In this way, "one image can lead to another, creating a chain of visual decisions and discoveries that gradually expands the possibilities of the original drawing."
