THIS HEAT - OPENING TONIGHT September 10–October 1 THIS HEAT - OPENING TONIGHT September 10–October 18, 2026 Opening Reception 6-8PM at the New York Studio School 8 W 8th St, NY 10011 featuring Brenda Goodman @brengoodman Steve DiBenedetto @dibenedettosteve Bendix Harms @bendixharms Brenda Goodman, Covid 5, 2020, Oil, Mixed Materials on Wood, 50 x 36 in Steve DiBenedetto, Vegital Observatatory, 2026, Oil on Linen, 25 x 21 in Bendix Harms, Tears of No Return, 2020, Oil on Linen, 90.5 x 71 in THIS HEAT is inspired by the British experimental band of the same name, whose music carried the psychic pressure of creating in a world that offered no guarantee of permanence or meaning, while insisting that the attempt to make it still matters. The same pressure runs through the works of Goodman, DiBenedetto, and Harms. Yet, their art reflects years of endurance, questioning, and a willingness to try again, wherever it may lead.
Monday Evening Drawing In Person with Daniel Licht Monday Evening Drawing In Person with Daniel Licht (@dan1el1cht ) September 28–December 14, 2026 Course Description: In class we will play what I have called the game of perception: draw what you see and erase what you don’t—no winners, no losers, just drawing. We will draw nothing in particular as a way to find out just how much that is. Outside of class, students will be encouraged to make whatever they like and to bring it in to share. We will look and learn together. Class will often begin with discussions and presentations, looking to history as something to revere, reject, dismantle, and join. Saturday Morning Figure Painting In Person with Ca Saturday Morning Figure Painting In Person with Catherine Lepp (@catherinelepp) September 26–December 12, 2026 Course Description: This class covers the foundations of painting from the figure and allows students to explore color mixing, proportion and composition, painting the flesh and discovering how to paint light onto a canvas. Over the semester, working from the live model, we will explore different painting concepts and poses with reference to contemporary and historical artists. Students will gain an understanding of how to translate an actual experience from observation into paint. We will explore anatomy and proportion of the human form, how the figure relates to the grid, limited color palettes, plus scale, shape and mark making in relation to what we are seeing. NEW: Saturday Afternoon Sculpture In-Person with M NEW: Saturday Afternoon Sculpture In-Person with Michelle Segre (@michsegre) September 26–December 12, 2026 Course Description: The purpose of this 11-class course is to provide a framework of short assignments (5-7) designed to push students to explore and experiment with a variety of materials and methods. The class will be conducted workshop-style, with students using the clay room as their studio. Projects will be worked on both in and out of class, with individual meetings and demonstrations as needed. Slide shows will occur regularly featuring work that is relevant to the assignments. Group critiques and class discussions will take place on the due date of each project. Registration is now OPEN for our Fall Evening & We Registration is now OPEN for our Fall Evening & Weekend Classes! We offer both in-person and virtual sections of 11-week classes, where artists can experience the School's "learning through making" pedagogy firsthand. This is a great way to learn alongside other working artists and join the NYSS community. Classes begin September 22, after the Fall Marathons take place. Apply NOW for September 8-18 Marathons! 10 days, 9 Apply NOW for September 8-18 Marathons! 10 days, 9 am–6 pm, with a 1–2 pm lunch break. [🔗Link in bio] The Marathon intensive addresses the importance of drawing as the basis of understanding one’s experience in the world and is based on an exploration of the most direct route to an enriched understanding of the language of the plastic arts. The innovation inherent in the Marathon program reawakens the way that drawing is experienced by artists and appreciators alike. Not only are participants fully engaged in the physical aspects of making art, they are also intellectually challenged and stimulated by extensive group and individual critiques. Drawing Marathon – IN-PERSON: Moving Parts with Fran O’Neill Drawings may be cut apart and reassembled, enlarged or reduced, combined with other images, or translated into new forms. Through this process, students will investigate how shifts in context, scale, composition, and material can fundamentally change the meaning and experience of an image. Drawing Marathon – IN-PERSON: The Substance of Memory with Yevgeniya Baras & Guest This course is a rigorous exploration of drawing through the lens of memory. Through studio projects, readings, discussions, and critiques, students will engage with drawing as an open ended research practice, employing unconventional materials, ephemeral marks, archival sources, mapping, and text. Drawing Marathon – VIRTUAL: Drawing on the Ground with Rosie Lopeman In this virtual Drawing Marathon we will start by looking at the “least” of things, the smallest of ideas, and how those quiet gestures in and of themselves are significant. In doing so, we find a greater authenticity to our ambition for works of magnitude and complexity. Sculpture Marathon – IN-PERSON: Researching Sensation with Jilaine Jones [Course Full] This marathon will address what the experience of a subject is, through ones’ eyes, body; and then too materials – how a range of materials feel and act. Dimensionally the marathon spans bas-relief, the three dimensional, and then in the last days is decided for the individual, for instance a painter could focus on a compressed more two-dimensional direction.
