Rachel Rickert in the Lehman Painting Studio

The Lehman Painting Studio, or ‘Big Painting,’ was one of the first rooms I saw during my tour of NYSS in 2010.  It remains one of the showpieces of tours for visitors and prospective students today.  The skylights in the tall ceilings bring light in even during dark winter days.  The room serves two purposes.  During the Marathon, it’s a whirlwind of charcoal and frenzied activity.  Students travel from around the globe to engage fully with the act of drawing.  During the regular semester, a workmanlike hum descends as full time students begin longer projects not limited by time or scale.

I stopped in to snap a few images of Rachel Rickert painting in her corner nook at the southern end of the studio.  Her figure paintings and studies lined the walls, and the light streamed in the windows facing 8th Street.  See more of Rachel’s work here.
