I remember the Whitney Studio fireplace when I at the New York Studio School in 1979-80 when Herbert Matter used that loft as a studio.  I was awestruck.

In early 1988, I attended a lecture Mercedes gave about Giacometti in the Whitney Studio. She spoke about the book she wrote on him along with photos of Giacometti’s sculpture by her late husband. I remember her saying that Giacometti told her, “my studio was small, but the more I worked the larger it grew.”

Also, in the fall of 1980, we were invited to go up to the office to see a small bust of Diego that was created by Giacometti which Mercedes owned.  I got to look at it closely, but I don’t think I was able to hold it.  I think Bruce Gagnier took us up to the office to see it.

Giacometti is one of my favorite sculptors.  On the space divider in my garage studio in California, I took a Sharpie pen and wrote his name along with David Smith and JMW Turner.  Our house is about to be sold, and I wonder if the new owner will scratch his head and wonder who they are and why I wrote their names.
