Svetlana Alpers is professor emerita of history of art at the University of California, Berkeley, and a visiting scholar in art history at New York University. Her many books include the new Walker Evans: Starting from Scratch, as well as The Art of Describing, The Vexations of Art, and Roof Life. She lives in New York City and France.
Joshua Chuang is head of the Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Division of Art, Prints and Photographs and Robert B. Menschel Senior Curator of Photography at The New York Public Library. Prior to this, he served as chief curator at the Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona, and the inaugural Richard Benson Associate Curator of Photography and Digital Media at the Yale University Art Gallery.
