A historian of European art, and Vice President of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Mariët Westermann is the author of several books, includingA Worldly Art: The Dutch Republic 1585-1718 (A New York TimesNotable Book of the Year); The Amusements of Jan Steen: Comic Painting in the 17th CenturyRembrandt: Art and Ideas; and Anthropologies of Art. Her current research concerns the medium of painting as a resource of European culture and the Garden of Eden in the imagination of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.
