James Siena and Alain Kirili with David Cohen: Journeys to Sculpture

James Siena (b. 1957, California) is a New York-based artist working across a range of media, including printmaking, drawing, painting, and sculpture to explore precision and variation in rule-based linear abstractions. His complex, freehand geometric patterns are guided by self-imposed, predetermined structural devices or “visual algorithms.” Siena’s work has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions, and is held in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, among others.

Alain Kirili is a New York based artist and internationally recognized for his iron sculptures and large scale public works. Kirili is represented in private and public collections both nationally and internationally, including the MoMA NY, Musée National d’Arte Moderne in Paris, France, and the Institut Valencia d’Art Modern in Valencia, Spain. Recent exhibitions include Musée des Beaux Arts de Caen in Caen, France, Musée de la Cohue in Vannes, France, and Akira Ikeda Gallery in Tokyo, Japan.

David Cohen is publisher and editor of artcritical.com and moderator of The Review Panel. Formerly art critic for the New York Sun (2003-08) and gallery director at the New York Studio School (2001-10). Cohen presently teaches at the latter institution in addition to FIT, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and Pratt Institute.
