Portrait of Irving Sandler, 2006, pencil on paper

Phong Bui is an artist, writer, independent curator, and former curatorial advisor at MoMA PS1, 2007 to 2010. He is also the Co-Founder, Publisher/Editor-in-Chief of the monthly journal the Brooklyn Rail, the publishing press Rail Editions, and the Rail Curatorial Projects.

Dr. Irving Sandler is Professor Emeritus of Art History at State University of New York and a contributing editor of Art in America. He has authored four surveys of art as well as monographs on Alex Katz, Al Held, Mark di Suvero and Deborah Kass. He was director of the Neuberger Museum of Art in and co-founder of Artists Space Gallery. In 2008, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award in Art Criticism from the International Association of Art Critics.

Swept Up By Art: An Art Critic in the Post-Avant Garde Era comes twelve years after the publication of Irving Sandler’s first memoir, A Sweeper-Up After Artists (Thames and Hudson, 2003). A testimony to Sandler’s inexhaustible documentation of American art in his time, this volume reveals Sandler at his best: an ardent thinker, a charming observer, and erudite historian and writer.

The story unfolds in loose chronological order through ten chapters, outlining moments of cultural and artistic revolution that shaped the development of American Art, through the lens of Sandler’s close, interpersonal relationships with artists such as Chuck Close, Elizabeth Murray, Richard Serra, and Cindy Sherman. This memoir serves as a uniquely personal and historical account of the New York art world from the advent of Abstract Expressionism to the state of painting and sculpture in today’s globalized and heterogeneous art market.
