Garry Nichols on Robert Rauschenberg: Life and Art

Garry Nichols is an Australian-born and New York-based painter, teacher, and lecturer who studied fine art at the National Art School in Sydney and the New York Studio School. His New York exhibitions include shows at the Brooklyn Museum, Leo Castelli Gallery, White Columns, the Drawing Center, David Beitzel Gallery, Rotunda Gallery, Pierogi Gallery and Sideshow Gallery. In Australia, Nichols has shown at Gallery A, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Macquarie Galleries and Stella Downer Fine Art.

Nichols is the recipient of awards including the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts Grant for Painting, the Esther Gottlieb Foundation Grant and the New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in Painting. He has lectured and taught throughout the United States and Australia at institutions such as the National Academy, Parsons School of Design and Chautauqua Institution.

Robert Rauschenberg: Life and Art is informed by Nichols’ direct research from the Rauschenberg Studio archives in 2008, his work as assistant to the artist from 1986-1989 and his involvement with Rauschenberg’s 1993 Guggenheim exhibition and 1997 Retrospective.
