Born in 1985, Esteban Cabeza de Baca’s childhood hometown of San Ysidro, California, virtually straddled the U.S.–Mexico border, as did his family. He employs a broad range of painterly techniques, entwining layers of graffiti, landscape, and pre-Columbian pictographs in ways confounding Cartesian single-point perspective. Cabeza de Baca’s recent solo exhibitions include Let Earth Breathe, Crystal Bridges Museum, Arkansas; Nepantla, Garth Greenan Gallery, New York; and Life is one Drop in Limitless Oceans…, Kunstfort, Vijfhuizen, Netherlands. He received a BFA from The Cooper Union in 2010 and an MFA from Columbia University in 2014. He currently lives and works in Queens, New York, and is represented by Garth Greenan Gallery.
