Arlene Shechet is a sculptor known for her effortless combination of disparate elements and boundary-collapsing visual paradoxes. With gravity-defying work that seems to tilt, contort, bend, and melt, Shechet’s sculptures appear to be set in motion while remaining still. Highly technical and yet entirely intuitive, her work embraces improvisation and seeks to examine the humor and pathos of being alive and in a body. Her monumental exhibition, Girl Group, is on view through November at Storm King Art Center.
Anne Reeve is Curator at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington DC, where she oversees the museum’s collection of modern and contemporary sculpture. She organized the Hirshhorn’s first major collection exhibition devoted exclusively to the work of women and gender-nonconforming artists, Put It This Way: (Re)Visions of the Hirshhorn Collection (August 2022-September 2023), as well as their recent presentation of the landmark survey exhibition, Simone Leigh (November 2023-March 2024). Her writing has appeared in various publications including Art in America and Art Papers; she holds a BA from Sarah Lawrence College and an MA in the History of Art from University College London.
