The New York Studio School mourns the passing of our dear friend and longtime Board Member, the Hon. J. William Middendorf II, who died on October 24, 2025, at the age of 101.

Ambassador Middendorf led an extraordinary life of service—as a naval officer, diplomat, Secretary of the Navy, and devoted advocate for the arts. At the Studio School, he brought insight, generosity, and a deep belief in the transformative power of art and education.

We will remember his kindness, wisdom, and unwavering support of our mission. His legacy will continue to inspire our community for years to come.

Chair of the NYSS Board of Trustees Maud Byrt shares, “Ambassador Middendorf had an extraordinary life, including exemplary service to our country. Many of us remember him coming by the school to look in on critiques or visit a Marathon. He was so vital and curious, and he was a great champion of our alumni.”

Alum Michael Tcheyan shares, “Ambassador Middendorf was an inspiration to me and the guiding light for the Alumni Association during my time as co-chair. An extremely talented painter, a gifted composer of over 100 works played by world class symphony orchestra’s around the world, and a brilliant businessman turned global diplomat as well, the School was fortunate to have this towering Renaissance man on its board for so many years and his shoes will be difficult to fill.”
