Charity Baker is a painter currently living and working in NYC. Formally trained in architecture at Pratt Institute, she worked professionally in this field for several years. Simultaneously she painted the life surrounding her, slowly combining and elaborating on a unique idealized genre. Drawn to the New York Studio School Marathon in 2016 Charity stayed to complete the MFA program in 2019, and has been painting full time while also teaching and assisting in the Marathons. She is the recipient of the Mercedes Matter/Ambassador Middendorf prize 2019 and 2020, and the Hohenberg Travel Grant 2019 which she used to study art in Spain and Italy. In 2018 she received a full scholarship to attend the summer residency at Chautauqua, NY. Baker’s work has been featured in a variety of Group and Solo shows: Sideshow Gallery, NY; Pratt Institute, NY; Hampden Gallery, Umass Amherst, MA; Art at Kings Oaks, PA; Fowler-Kellogg Art Center, NY; AXA Art Prize Exhibition, San Francisco Art Institute; Richard Gray Gallery, Chicago; New York Academy of Art; The Fosnot Gallery, CT, New York Studio School, NY; and several online project spaces. In 2020 she was awarded First Runner up of the Wing Art Award in the UK. Her work resides in private collections across the USA.
