Iron and Bronze: Works by Ed Smith and Lee Tribe

Iron and Bronze, 2 great ages of Ovid’s Metamorphoses is personified in the pairing of Ed Smith and Lee Tribe at the New York Studio School Gallery. Both sculptors use metal to evoke figural images that reveal a rich past, a distinctive future and a very immediate palpable present.

Smith and Tribe have long associations with NYSS, as faculty, lecturers and visitors. Their work reveals not only the force of distinct personalities but shows the presence of the hand of man in sculpture.

Along with their sculptures a selection of drawings by Smith and Tribe will be on view. The drawings help to form and inform the sculpture. The process and gesture of the drawings relates back to the sculpture over again creating a sympathy that is unusual in a 2 person exhibition. In fact the dialogue of the work of these artists in both 2 and 3 dimensions is extraordinary in its understanding and empathy.
