2024 Alumni Exhibition
The 2024 Alumni Exhibition will run on Artsy from August 5 through September 30. The exhibition features more than 175 artworks by 120 artists. Samira Abbassy, artist and co-founder of the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts Studio Program, and Jason Stopa, painter and writer, are this year’s esteemed jurors. The Mercedes Matter Awards Ceremony will be held virtually on Tuesday, September 17 at 5pm ET.
This year’s exhibition coincides with the founding of the New York Studio School by Mercedes Matter and a dedicated group of artists on September 23, 1964. We celebrate six decades of alumni—from those who organized the first classes with Matter to those who most recently joined this distinguished and steadfast group of artists. The array of work by artists from around the world in this year’s show typifies the creative legacy of which NYSS alums are a part and the community of artmakers forged in studios, classrooms, and beyond.

Samira Abbassy (b.1965, Ahwaz, Iran) is based in New York. Abbassy emigrated to London, UK, in 1967, where she studied at the Canterbury College of Art. She moved to New York City to co-found the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts in 1998, where her studio is based and holds a lifetime tenure position. Abbassy’s work has been shown at the Metropolitan, the British Museum, LACMA and the 26th Venice Biennial. Abbassy’s work is in private and public collections worldwide, including: the Metropolitan Museum, British Museum, British Government Art Collection, Grey Art Gallery at NYU, Burger Collection, Donald Rubin collection, Los Angeles County Museum, Afkhami Collection, and Brattleboro Museum, VT. Her fellowships include: Yaddo (2006, 2022, and 2024) and Saltonstall (2017); two NYFA awards (2007 in drawing and 2018 in painting); a Joan Mitchell Fellowship (2010); and a Pollock-Krasner Grant (2014). In 2018 she was nominated for Anonymous Was a Woman.
Jason Stopa (b. 1983, United States) is a painter and writer living in Brooklyn. He received his BFA from Indiana University Bloomington and his MFA from Pratt Institute in NYC. Recent solo shows include Glass Arcadia at Thomas Park, Seoul, Korea (2024); DIY Paradise at Assembly, Houston, TX (2023); and Garden of Music at Diane Rosenstein, LA (2023). Recent group exhibitions include Intuitive Nature: Geometric Roots & Organic Foundations at The Schneider Museum, Ashland, OR (2023) and Wayne Thiebaud Influencer: A New Generation at Manetti Shrem Museum of Art at UC Davis, CA (2021). Stopa is Assistant Professor of Fine Arts at the Fashion Institute of Technology. He is a contributing writer to The Brooklyn Rail, BOMB, Hyperallergic, Momus, Artforum and artcritical, among other art journals.
