Virtual Sculpture Marathon with Jilaine Jones

Bas-Relief: Touching Space

Course Description

Bas-relief is a territory joining sculpture, drawing, and painting: material ideas formed across the plane of a wall, between the 3-dimensional and 2-dimensional. This Sculpture Marathon will explore bas-relief initially through conveying the spatial construct of a perceptual source, and carry that work forward by focusing on ideas and feelings offered by materials and approaches of process. The course will be conducted virtually, utilizing Zoom as the virtual “meeting room”. The bas-reliefs will be made in clay, chip board/cardboard, plaster, and mixed-media (this can be flexible as per the participant’s studio). The source will be of each participants making, in their own space; the nature and idea within this set up may be unconventional, and comprise the span of an installation, a wide view, or a simple group of forms. Working perceptually the topography of space is bas relief’s revelation; this course is as much a particular experience of seeing as it is of making, for the sculptor or painter it becomes a way to touch and form the spatial. The direction this project takes will be oriented to the interest of each student. Some may stay within a rectangular format, or others not; some may rework with the viewed source again and again, others may extrapolate an essential idea. Discussion of the subject by images will be integrated throughout the marathon.
