Thursday Evening Sculpture – with Lee Tribe (Virtual)
This Virtual Sculpture class will focus on a the “Corner Brace”, a common element used in construction of steel and other materials to strengthen planes when it is bent at an angle. Following the use of this simple device, we will develop many small sculptures from card, paper and glue. The resultant works could be constructed in steel when facilities were again available (enlarged and fabricated after beginning as a model) or conceived of as independent paper sculptures. They can certainly stand-alone as little sculptures in their own right. With a little imagination, this seemingly simple way of working is versatile, rich and rewarding, can easily be done from one’s home or studio, and opens new doors to ways of thinking about sculptural possibilities. All students will begin by making a sculpture / sculptures in response to a set project after seeing images of related examples. The following week, works produced shall be displayed and discussed. I plan to introduce additional materials thereby exploring the possibilities in the use of other materials, while considering what sculpture is and what it can be. The possibilities could range from a simple interpretation to something more complex, the use of one’s imagination will be encouraged.
