Course Description

What is sculpture? Why figure? Is the human body a sculpture? Does sculpture have structure? Is structure sculptural? Can we see structure? Does geometry help? Do we need anatomy? These and other questions are addressed in this intensive 11-week course, focused on furthering the understanding of ”sculptural idea” by using human forms, with its sense of unity and connections of various parts, their spatial arrangement, balance, proportions, weight relations and tensions.

For the fall issue of @galeriemagazine, @jacnyc interviews @grace__carney as she prepares for her first solo exhibition at P·P·O·W early next year.

“’I never plan out what I’m going to do. I always want to bring myself into new territory that makes me uncomfortable—or throw a wrench in it. I think that’s what makes better work.’ It is a provocative and fearless statement for the artist, whose sumptuously abstract oil paintings, which reveal hints of figuration, quickly sold out at the @independent_hq in May. She could easily rest on her creative laurels, as emerging collectors continue to clamor for her work, with comparisons to the likes of Cecily Brown and Joan Mitchell. But Carney encounters each blank canvas as a chance to embrace her practice anew. “I feel that my source materials are always changing,” she explains. “When I start a painting, I’m searching for what it is that I’m interested in, which gives me the freedom to bring in many different elements. The direction will change in the middle of the process, and I like that layering and collage of influences.’”

Thank you everyone who joined us last night for "Morton Feldman Returns to Eighth Street," a concert celebrating the groundbreaking and hugely influential composer Morton Feldman, who was Dean of NYSS from 1969 to 1971. Immense gratitude to acclaimed violinist Miranda Cuckson @mirandacmusic and pianist Conor Hanick @conorlhanick for their incredible performance of works by Feldman, whose musical creativity was intertwined to a remarkable degree with the visual arts and his personal relationships with contemporary artists. His quiet, intimate, and radiant compositions engage radically with our sensory experiences of time, sound, and space.

Where does the meaning of a painting reside? We often think of meaning in connection to a painting’s subject matter. During the great adventure of Modernity, meaning was also deliberately cultivated and found in the way a painting was made. For painters, meaning is located both in what is painted, and in how it is painted. Often assumed to be primarily conceptual, meaning in painting is perhaps most essentially a felt experience. This panel discussion invites six representational painters, working in a wide range of attitudes, to have a conversation together about meaning in their own work and in painting at large.

NYSS is looking to hire a freelance WordPress Developer. The Web Developer will work closely with staff to perform occasional website maintenance, which includes code and script updates on various types of pages from permanent part pages to temporary (event, courses etc), routine site audits, and SEO consultation. The Web Developer is a remote, on-call contract position with a flexible schedule, estimated about 2-10 hours per month for site maintenance, with some larger possibly project-based contracts planned as well.
