Course Description

What is sculpture? Why figure? Is the human body a sculpture? Does sculpture have structure? Is structure sculptural? Can we see structure? Does geometry help? Do we need anatomy? These and other questions are addressed in this intensive 11-week course, focused on furthering the understanding of ”sculptural idea” by using human forms, with its sense of unity and connections of various parts, their spatial arrangement, balance, proportions, weight relations and tensions.

Lara M. Evans (Cherokee Nation) @art_allovr is an art historian based in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She earned her PhD at the University of New Mexico. Her most recent curatorial project is Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Renwick Invitational 2023: Sharing Honors and Burdens. After a long career as art history faculty, Dr. Evans is now Vice President of Programs for First Peoples Fund @1stpeoplesfund, where she builds arts infrastructure for Native communities.

Manuela Well-Off-Man @manuelawelloffman @chiefcurator_mocna is an art historian and chief curator at the IAIA Museum of Contemporary Native Arts @iaiamocna @instituteofamericanindianarts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She has curated national and international contemporary Native American art exhibitions and authored numerous catalog essays and magazine articles. Well-Off-Man received her Ph.D. in art history from the Ruhr University, Bochum, Germany, and her M.A. degree in art history, archaeology and pedagogy from the University of Cologne, Germany.

Stop by the NYSS Gallery to see "Stephen Antonakos Drawings: Geometry and Space" on view through January 7. Gallery hours: 10am-6pm, daily.

An engaged New Yorker, with deep roots in Greek culture and religion, Stephen Antonakos @stephen_antonakos defined his art as “real things in real spaces in the here and now.” He is best known for his neon panels, large installations, and public works worldwide, including his 1990 Neons for the 59th Street Marine Transfer Station, the glowing outlines and geometric shapes defining the building, visible from the West Side Highway in Manhattan. Despite his working with a remarkable range of materials, at scales ranging from the intimate to the monumental, drawing was his most enduring, varied, and productive practice. People close to him have quipped, “Stephen was born with a pencil in his hand.” Sometimes that pencil was a straightforward stick of graphite. At other times, it was a literally multifaceted gathering of colors that allowed for complex, often surprising orchestrations of hues as both plane and line. Sometimes, Antonakos found ways of creating boundaries and the paths of trajectories with edges and folds. At still other times, he discovered drawing gestures in found elements. Throughout, he expanded our conception of what a drawing could be.

NYSS welcomes you to visit the studios of current MFA candidates & graduating Certificate students. Located in the heart of Greenwich Village, in the original home of the Whitney Museum of American Art, our historic light-filled spaces offer inspiration and infrastructure to aspiring artists.

This is a special opportunity to see recent works in the making and gain insight into students' processes and experiences at NYSS. Guests can also view current exhibitions in the Student Gallery and our main Gallery. An information booth will be staffed for visitors interested in learning more about the full-time and part-time programs offered at the Studio School.
