Sunday Afternoon Painting – VIRTUAL with Jonathan Harkham

COURSE FULL

Course Description

Every great painter in all of human history has loved and learned from someone that came before them. In this course we will focus on the importance of transcription. Each week we will work from one great painting or drawing from history and explore the motivation, composition and mark of the artist. Subsequently using what we discover to build on the various themes and components to further our own personal goals in experiential mark making. Throughout the classes and works we create we will also continue to reinforce the power of the rectangle, the importance of scale, and building our relationship to paint as a material that carries personal information. Promoting the idea of “objectified looking” and highlighting the power of process through an additional series of short still lives we will set up and paint/draw from as part of the course to fully understand the importance of transcription and how one builds upon an inspirational great work to further their own personal relationship to painting.
