Course Description

This marathon will address what the experience of a subject is, through ones’ eyes, body; and then too materials – how a range of materials feel and act. Dimensionally the marathon spans bas-relief, the three dimensional, and then in the last days is decided for the individual, for instance a painter could focus on a compressed more two-dimensional direction. The installation for subject in the shared studio spaces will be spatial, place-like, and will not include models. It will be investigated in two contrasting ways: as a spatial felt experience from one view, and then instead, as a three-dimensional dynamic structure. Why and how our source is used for artmaking will be under discussion, accelerated, unpacked, working as a group to know the ‘outside’ subject as an idea and as a specific experience. Meanwhile motivating a parallel manifestation of these realizations through materials we will work with the qualities of the materials empirically. By intensive experimentation, what is made will be found by watching what the materials do naturally and through oversensitive, logical, illogical, manipulations and organization. Materials used will be string, wire, paper, wood dowel, wood pieces, clay, carboard, cloth, plaster, found material.
