Saturday Morning Sculpture – VIRTUAL with Jilaine Jones

Course Description

How one goes about making sculpture results in an underlying sculptural experience. This course addresses and instigates making sculpture based on experiences organized into topics. Fundamental topics exist through all sculpture historically and offer a way into both making and seeing. Examples of the topics include gravity, structure, assemblage, and the monument. Techniques with materials, an approach correlated with the discussed topic, will generate ongoing work. Examples of processes are clay building (as mass and gesture), construction of cardboard (planar), dowels and wire (linear), plaster work by casting and direct use, and joining found elements. Depending on the participants’ respective workspaces and tools, the processes can transfer to heavier materials or not, either will be productive. Some of the work may involve responding to life- the figure, place, objects: but our orientation will be for the sculpture as an object, being what is referred to as ‘abstract’. Developing each topic idea, introduced with images, and a way of working with a material, will be the basis for the course work. This ongoing work should happen independently through the week between the classes, which we will then look at and discuss as a group weekly. The course will be conducted virtually, utilizing Zoom as the virtual “meeting room”.
