Room with a View Landscape Painting Marathon – with Fran O’Neill

Please note that Room with a View Landscape Painting Marathon – with Fran O’Neill will be taught virtually this summer.  Faculty members have adapted lectures, critiques, presentations, and assignments to an online format and will maintain the high caliber of experiential learning and content that is the basis of the New York Studio School.  Though in a different form, your education and experience, will continue; we look forward very much to your participation.

Summer 2020

Course Description

“Room with a View” – In this unique and challenging time, students will look for the possibility of landscape within their own limitations. Depending on where you are in the world, it may be a view out of your window, or it could be that you are able to access landscapes that may be far reaching and wildly diverse: vista views of rolling hills; dense forests; backyards; close ups of shrubs and ‘tree portraits’, just to name a few. Equally the time of day and weather conditions can be just as extreme and different. During this unprecedented time of isolation, students will explore how to make the most of their own circumstances, consider changing light conditions, from morning to evening to cloudy to full sun days. This will enhance their own vision and allow them to explore what truly interests them and to consider variations in composition. Guidance will be given to ensure that students have appropriate view, with the hope that perhaps during some portion of the class, students may be able to work outside from direct observation, though, only if safe to do so where they are located.

Participants will be challenged to explore image making, concentrating on composition, form, value and hue. During this rigorous class, students will explore color mixing and will be challenged to consider the metaphor of color, via the use of limited palettes. Highly individual critiques will take place, via zoom meetings with additional group critiques throughout the sessions to enable students to learn from one another and to increase their ability to read paintings. This Marathon course is designed for all wanting to invigorate their painting practice, break out of their comfort zone and expand their visual vocabulary.
