Painting Marathon – IN-PERSON: the Mask, the Wing, and the Mirror with Sam Levy, Kaitlin McDonough & Clintel Steed

Course Description

Archetypes and symbols are access points used to mark transitions, to hold important ideas, and to dream new worlds into being. This Painting Marathon will ask participants to weave archetypal imagery from deep art historical works with symbols of personal relevance. The three Instructors recently traveled to draw from the frescoed wall paintings of Pompeii, specifically the Red Room of the Villa of Mysteries, and the tomb paintings of Paestum. Expanding upon their direct experience of engagement with these paintings from antiquity and their symbolic weight, this Marathon will use Roman wall paintings, combined with additional examples from antiquity accessible in the Metropolitan Museum of art, to guide to our personal and collective journeys in class. By working with live models, objects, personal symbols, and transcription imagery, we will create original paintings in dialogue with uniquely timeless works of humanity. This course will explore color, symbolism, composition, site specificity, scale, proportion, human gesture, form, volume, weight, story, and will offer new gateways into poetry and meaning.
