Intersession Drawing Marathon – VIRTUAL: Constructing Space with Ed Praybe

Course Description

During this Drawing Marathon participants will focus on the reciprocal relationship between motif and drawing. How do we construct a still life, the arrangement of objects and open intervals of space, in order to draw from it? How does the way we approach the drawing affect how we construct that space? How do both the drawings and the staging of objects evolve and inform one another throughout the process of observing and drawing? Drawing sources will be still life objects/arrangements and interior spaces in each participant’s own home or studio. Students will create a body of drawings, some quick and some sustained, working from a combination of direct observation and synthetically constructed approaches. A variety of drawing exercises will address issues of shape, form, structure, value, emphasis, measurement/proportion, time and change. Participants will draw inspiration and gain insights into course topics from variety of historical and contemporary examples of drawing and painting.

Individual feedback will be given by the instructor along with informal group critiques during the working sessions throughout the Marathon. The final day will be devoted to an in-depth group critique. We will use Zoom as our virtual classroom meeting space and Padlet to share work for feedback and critiques. All meetings and critiques will be conducted live over Zoom.
