In-Person Drawing Marathon: Establishing the Horizon Line with Clintel Steed
Establishing the Horizon Line
In this Marathon, we will study the power of the horizon line. We will work from the still life and the model, using Cezanne as our guide to explore the geometric idea of the square, the circle and the cone. We will focus on line, shape and form. We will work from observation every day and will push the boundaries of what we think a finished drawing is. We will challenge ourselves to follow ideas of looking and reacting to see where they lead.
The first week we will be working on drawings in the morning, exploring how to establish the horizon line and building upon it. We will look for the axis that moves through space and use the classroom as a universe. Each day of the first week, we will make drawings from the set up. After in the afternoon we will do small paintings thinking about the horizon line and focusing on shapes. We will explore how we can draw and use color to make form and space. We will explore angles and use a plumb line.
During the second week, we will work on larger scale drawings. We will make one large drawing a day and experience what it is like to work on one drawing for an entire day, focusing on the horizon line and relationships. The purpose of this Marathon is not to create ‘finished’ works, but to experience what happens when we narrow our focus to establishing the horizon line and all that it bears.
