Drawing Marathon – IN PERSON: Finding Your Own Way with Susanna Coffey
No Class Sunday, January 25
Course Description
This class is designed to immerse you in your sense of sight and to help each person find motifs that energize and inspire. This Marathon will help you to understand how and why you are perceiving as you are and how to make something of that knowledge. Drawing is a way to account for, express and communicate what you have seen with your eyes, mind or in your imagination.
Course Outline
You will be introduced to different approaches to drawing and become more adept in your ability with a variety of drawing materials and techniques. As well as exploring the unique “voice” each material usage can provide, we will be trying a variety of gestural approaches with which to use those materials. In the studio we will often be working from; a huge rather shambolic still-life set up, smaller “dinner table” set ups that we cooperatively assemble, a portrait and/or a self-portrait motif. In our studio work each person will be exploring their own direction and will be looking for a personal, narrative content that even the sparsest composition can convey.
In addition to the studio sessions there will be some museum visits (TBA but probably to the Gray Museum at NYU, the Folk Art Museum), sometimes we may be doing a bit of movement to music in order to expand each person’s gestural use of materials.
There will be several class discussions around readings (to be selected by the group) and your projects as they develop. We may have a lunchtime film or speaker, so be prepared to bring a lunch to eat in during those times. At the end of the Marathon I will invite a guest artist to speak with you about everything you created.
