Alumni Spotlight: Mona Shen (MFA 2018)
April 29, 2020 · Alumni

“When I came to study at Studio School in 2016, I immediately realized it was a place where I could see myself becoming a more dedicated painter and my instinct was correct. The community opened my perspective to a world of painters and paintings and the ability paintings have to convey and transform the most profound ideas and feelings, which seems especially important at this time in history. Being an artist for me is a journey where I am constantly seeking personal relationships to other people, my surroundings, society, culture and nature. The school provided a platform for me to investigate these relationships through visions that reflect my own thoughts and experiences.
At the Studio School, I developed a strong belief in drawing as a means to allow me the freedom to improvise before anything is formed. Drawing has become very personal and intimate, very direct and intuitive and I am still trying to bring that experience to painting.”
